In 1905 Mrs. Civilla D. Martin and her husband were in New York where they met Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle who were
devout Christians. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for about twenty years and her husband, who also was
crippled, traveled to and from his work in a wheel chair. Once while visiting the Doolittles, Dr. Martin
commented on their cheerful nature and asked what their secret was. Mrs. Doolittle calmly replied, "His eye
is on the sparrow and I know he watches me." This simple statement of faith inspired the Martins to write this
poem. They mailed the words to Charles Gabriel, who wrote the music for the song.
Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He cares for me
I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
