An Earth Angel

This page is for a very special lady who has been a loving, caring "mother" to so many children in the Roanoke area and an inspiration to all who meet her. She is truly one of God's beautiful people who walks into one's life and leaves indelible "golden footprints", never to be forgotten. Ms. Evelyn, this is your page - done with love and sincere thanks for all you have done for so many and for your special help with my little great-niece.

Ms. Evelyn was born in Alvon, WV in 1928, the oldest girl of seventeen children, which probably explains her deep love for children and why she decided to start Evelyn's Home Away from Home in 1958 after being a licensed home provider and working with foster children for 10 years.

At the end of January 2005, Evelyn's Home Away from Home will be closing its doors since her license will expire at that time. She chose not to renew the license since there are changes in regulations on day care centers, discipline of children becoming more difficult and the good Lord knows she needs some time for herself and for her grand-children. It was a rare occasion if she ever missed a day of work at the center and in 40 years, she has had one vacation. Now, that's dedication! I know it will be a sad day for those who have been students and whose children in turn have been there for day care and/or pre-school. When she first started, hers was the first day care center that would take infants. Evelyn's was licensed to take care of 94 children and at one time had waiting lists. Her center has been valued for its Christian atmosphere and instruction. She will close with about 45 children ranging in age from 2 years to 4 years. There are also some older elementary children who stay at the center before and after school until their parents pick them up.

The children's day at the center consists first of hugs followed by arts, crafts, story times, naps, snacks and meals with the delightful and tempting aroma of the food wafting through the rooms as it cooks. When the weather permits, there is outdoor play time. The present staff consists of Ms. Evelyn, Mr. Cole and three additional staff members - all wonderful, caring teachers in so many ways. Ms.Evelyn, as well as the rest of her staff, has always been there with hugs or a lap for any child with a scraped knee, sore finger, or just a sad day! She will be missed by many!

Ms. Evelyn has had much recognition over the years, including the honor of being in Who's Who of American Women.
