Dream Castle

A loving Angel came to me in dreams.
She showed me life's not always what it seems.
She brought me to a place where Sweet Dreams live.
She gave to me a gift that I now give....
A Dreamer's Dream....

by Robert Alan

I believe that every child should have the right to their
dreams - and not the nightmares that parents sometimes create
for them by physical, emotional, mental or sexual abuse. As a
teacher for 33 years, I saw some of all types of abuse that
parents inflicted upon their children. Sometimes there is no
clue that abuse in any form exists. I will never forget one honor
student who never missed a day of school until her senior year
when she was absent for 3 days. When she returned, I jokingly
asked her if she had been ill or just playing hookey. She told
me with great happiness and relief that she had been in court.
Then she explained that ever since she was a child her father
had sexually abused her and controlled her every action with his
intimidations and threats. She had kept quiet all those years
until the day she learned he had started with her younger sister.
I told her how proud I was of her and she said that she was so
relieved now that he had been sentenced and her little sister
would be safe!

I have had students who were beaten with good old dad's belt,
some who got into drugs or ran away from home because good old
dad whould get drunk and beat mom black and blue and I could go
on and on. No child should ever be treated this way and no teacher
should ever be so unconcerned as the one in the poem below!

Listen Closely

On Monday, Billy didn't have his homework,
And when the teacher asked him "why?"
He said "because a monster ripped it up, after I told him a lie."
"You know monsters don't exist," the teacher said,
"and if you don't turn in your homework, no recess will you get."

On Tuesday, Billy had a stomach ache
And when the teacher asked him, "why?"
He said, "a monster took away my dinner, even my cherry pie."
"Billy I've told you once before, monsters are not real,
you'll have to wait 'til lunchtime before you get a meal."

On Wednesday, Billy had a bandage
Which covered his right eye.
When the teacher asked how it happened, this was his reply:
"A monster was running after me, when I ran into the door."
"Billy please," the teacher said, "I don't want to hear any more."

On Thursday, Billy refused to sit down,
And when the teacher asked him "Why?"
Billy said, "A monster whipped my bottom because I started to cry."
"Billy," said the teacher, "this is getting out of hand.
If you continue with these stories, in the corner you will stand."

On Friday, Billy didn't come to school,
And when the teacher found out why,
She said a little prayer to God in hopes Billy would survive.
For a monster had beaten Billy, and threatened him with a knife.
Now Billy is in a hospital bed, fighting for his life.

So listen and remember that monsters are for real.
Listen closely to kids' stories.
A wounded heart you may just heal.
