An Ode To My Hummingbirds

~by Fern S. Agee~

I've had a long wait
For the hummingbirds to congregate
Upon the perches to feed
On the sweet nectar they need.

They fluttered over my head
Not even noticing the flower bed!
On the top of their feeder
I tied a red bow -- none redder!

Placed it there to lure them in
As they darted forth to begin
Their search for an in-flight meal
While my excitement I could not conceal!!!

Those swift wings fluttered in the air
As two hummers would not let their mate share!
What flying jets
As they chased one another, you bet!

In the presence of those beautiful hummers I was enthralled;
I rose to my feet and stood tall
Watching as they soared upward expecting a nectar bow
While moving their long beaks to and fro!

Excitedly I watched those hummers fly
And chase one another under the sky!
They were so fast!
And I was flabbergast!

In the sunlight of the day they'll again be on the go
A-fluttering, a-soaring -- those hummers will steal the show!!!
For their performance I can hardly wait
As soon as darkness abates!!
