A Child Shall Lead Them

Five years ago my oldest niece, Kara Elisabeth witnessed the passing on of her great grandfather. She was only 7 years old at the time. We got the call late at night that after renewing his wedding vows with his wife of fifty years that her Pa Pa was failing fast. After the pastor finished the wedding vows, Pa Pa, who was in a coma, smiled. He was ready to go home.

By the time we got there he had already passed away. I imagine at that moment he was seeing our Heavenly Father face to face. Everyone was upset and crying, even though we knew it was coming you never can prepare yourself for that moment. His wife Honey and his children, grandchildren and friends were all crying.

The most amazing thing happened. Kara began taking everyone’s hands and interlocking them to form a circle. At this time Kara was only 7 years old, but you see, she has Down Syndrome so she was not as advanced as a normal 7 year old. When she had finished she told us all to bow our heads and lets’ pray. She just kept crying out with such urgency to “let’s pray, let’s pray”. With this she started to recite the Lord’s Prayer and we all joined in. If you were not crying before then you were when she finished.

Kara has been going to church since she was 5 weeks old. It took a long time for her to learn the Lord’s Prayer, but at that moment she recited it perfectly. It is written in the Bible “the Children shall lead them”. That was so true.

Her great grandma, Honey, has taught her about Jesus since she was a little baby. Honey has taught Kara and all of us the joy of knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Honey and Kara taught all of us how to love unconditionally.

When anyone left Honey and Pa Pa’s house, Honey would always stand at the door until she could no longer see your car driving down the road, hollering, “I love you my baby, drive careful, I love you”. As you were pulling away you could see her in your rearview mirror still waving and hollering. My sister once asked Honey why she did this, and she said “because if something were to happen to you, she wanted to make sure that the last person you saw, loved you so very much.

Honey has also gone to see her sweet Jesus just over a year ago. She was ready. In her last day that is all she talked about was going home to be with Jesus.

Kara still has Honey’s loving spirit and she has not been affected by this sometimes-cruel world we live in. She has friends of every race, color and gender. She does not make fun of anyone and is friends with everyone. She loves to go to the nursing home to see her other great grandma and she stops all along the way to grandma's room to give the other residents a hug. I can only hope and pray that she will always remain this way, innocent and loving and so filled with the spirit of Christ.
