Canvas of My Life

When my face is old and wrinkled
and my troubles here are past.
When many years I've had
and I'm speeding toward the last,
I will have painted on life's canvas
as I sat dreaming in the sun,
And rummage through my life,
to see the things I've done.

I'll remember the paths I've traveled
and all the things along the way,
And hope the brush strokes leave you,
with something good to say,
About the life I lived and the good things
I tried while here to do,
And hope there are no flaws,
to bring sad thoughts to you.

I want the picture to be perfect
and show colors that make you glad,
When you look back and think of me
and none to make you sad.
I pray there'll be no careless strokes
in this painting when I go,
I want to leave you happy,
this I hope will show.

I hope this life painting
brings to you no hurt nor tears,
I want this painting to show,
how I loved you through the years
Just to remind you of times
long passed in years gone by,
So you laugh at something in it
and never make you cry.

All my yesterdays will come through
so bright and clear.
The painting will dull with age
but I hope you keep it near.
It's just a plain old canvas,
a picture of the life I had with you,
But it's painted with every color,
of my love so warm and true.

Now I lay down my paint and brushes,
the painting's done and dry,
I really have to go,
because it's time to tell all of you good-bye.
I leave you with this canvas,
painted with so much of my love,
And I'll be watching how you view it,
from my place above.

If I see a tear upon your face
I hope it's followed with a smile,
Then I'll know I made you happy,
when I was with you, for that short while
