Bittersweet Memories

When I look at what surrounds me here I stand in paradise.

Throughout my days I’ve seen much beauty fill my eyes.

A broken fence that once was whole, a rusted bucket by the well.

Both had seen finer days but to me they had a story to tell.

Across a meadow the leaning barn once held hay to serve as feed,

Autumn leaves cover the ground no longer planted with garden seed.

A fallen tree halts the path where long ago I walked ‘neath sky of blue,

To the roofless church, its old steps now covered with moss and dew.

A lidless jar lay in the yard where once I spent many happy hours,

Only weeds grow there now where long ago were pretty flowers.

At the river’s edge an old tin can still sat filled with rain and sand,

The one that had held our fishing worms dug by my brother’s hands.

The woods called my name asking me to come and sit awhile,

That’s when I remembered something that brought to me a smile.

In a small hollowed shallow cave I left something many years ago.

Was it still there? I jumped up and ran to look for it; I just had to know!

I moved the stone that hid my childhood treasures safe all these years.

As I looked through them my eyes started to fill with happy tears.

A penny mommy gave me, a tin that was filled with tiny colored rocks.

A ragged page from a catalogue with pictures of lace edged socks.

I finished with my treasures then placed them back in their hiding place.

Those days were so long ago far away, oh how the tears washed my face.

I looked up into the sky and wished I could go home just one more time,

To walk the path, drink from the well and hear the little church bell’s chime.

Why do these memories from my childhood mean so much to me?

Because they are a part of life that I never again will see.

They are bittersweet memories that I recall when I need to rest.

It was the time of my life that I have always loved the best.
